Sierra Minera of Cartagena-La Unión

Cartagena, Traces of Mining

The urban development of Cartagena (12 km. from La Union) is very much related to the mining peak of the Sierra Minera of Cartagena and La Union, at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. Some of the most spectacular and emblematic buildings in Cartagena, made in the Modernist Style, are part of the legacy of the mining boom and the bourgeoisie linked to the mining activity. These buildings are: House “Zapata”, the Palace of “Aguirre”, House “Dorda”, House “Pedreño” and House “Cervantes”.
